Press Release
25 February 2025
The Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) urges ASEAN leaders and policymakers to take proactive steps in strengthening the status of Muslims within the region. The socio-political and economic landscape of ASEAN demands a more unified and strategic approach to ensure the rights and welfare of the Muslim population are upheld.
MAPIM emphasized that while ASEAN is a diverse and multicultural region, there is a pressing need to enhance the position of Muslims in governance, education, and economic opportunities. He stated, “Muslims in ASEAN contribute significantly to the development of the region. However, their participation in decision-making processes and economic advancement must be further empowered.”
The organization highlights several key areas requiring immediate attention:
- Political Representation – Encouraging greater Muslim involvement in policy formulation and governance at national and regional levels.
- Economic Development – Strengthening halal industries, Islamic finance, and entrepreneurship programs to ensure economic resilience.
- Education and Human Capital – Expanding access to quality education, scholarships, and vocational training for Muslim communities.
- Human Rights and Social Justice – Addressing discrimination, conflicts, and humanitarian crises affecting Muslim minorities.
MAPIM calls upon ASEAN governments to foster stronger intergovernmental collaborations and inclusive policies that promote unity and prosperity for all. The organization also urges regional bodies, civil society groups, and religious institutions to work together in addressing the challenges faced by Muslims in ASEAN.
Strengthening the status of Muslims in ASEAN is not about division but about ensuring equitable opportunities and fostering regional stability.
MAPIM remains committed to advocating for the upliftment of Muslims across ASEAN and will continue its efforts through dialogue, cooperation, and strategic initiatives.
