KUALA LUMPUR, April , 5 , 2025 ] – The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM) calls for the immediate convening of a Joint All-Malaysia Business Chambers Forum to address the far-reaching economic implications of the US tariff war legacy initiated during the Trump administration.
Despite leadership changes in Washington, many of the protectionist measures and tariffs imposed on global trade—particularly targeting China and impacting ASEAN markets—continue to reverberate. Malaysia, as a mid-sized trade-dependent nation, must prepare a consolidated response.
MAPIM views the situation as follows:
- National Economic Sovereignty at Stake: The ripple effects of US tariff policy have impacted Malaysia’s export competitiveness, manufacturing supply chains, and investment climate. A unified national strategy is needed.
- Urgent Need for Inter-Chamber Cooperation: MAPIM proposes the formation of a Joint Forum involving all major Malaysian business chambers, including but not limited to:
●Malay Chamber of Commerce (DPMM)
●Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCCIM)
●Indian Chamber of Commerce
●SME associations
●Halal industry bodies
●Islamic financial groups
- Reinforce South-South Trade and Regional Integration: Malaysia must leverage intra-OIC trade, ASEAN-China relations, and RCEP frameworks to reduce over-dependence on Western economies.
- Protect the Bumiputera and Islamic Economic Ecosystem: Particular attention should be given to sectors involving halal exports, Islamic finance, agri-business, and digital trade to ensure they are not sidelined in the global reshuffling of markets.
MAPIM urges MITI, MOF and Bank Negara to support this initiative with technical input and policy coordination. The time has come for Malaysian industry players to speak with one voice on global economic justice.
“We can no longer afford fragmented responses. What’s needed is a strategic, united national business front to face the new global economic order,” said Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid ,
President of MAPIM.
