MEDIA STATEMENT
13th May 2025
MODI MUST REMEMBER – MUCH OF THE VIOLENT PROVOCATION BEGAN FROM INDIA AGAINST KASHMIR
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) strongly asserts that the harsh statement made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – threatening firm retaliation in the event of future terrorist attacks – is deeply inappropriate and fails to acknowledge India’s significant role in provoking violence in the Kashmir region.
In his first public speech following a four-day cross-border military conflict between India and Pakistan, Modi stated: “This is not the era of war, but this is also not the era of terrorism.” However, the irony lies in the fact that the regime he leads has consistently implemented oppressive policies against the Muslim population of Kashmir – including gross human rights violations, massive militarization, and the enforcement of draconian laws such as the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
MAPIM reminds Prime Minister Modi that since India revoked the autonomous status of Kashmir in 2019, hundreds of incidents of violence, arbitrary arrests, and restrictions on freedom of expression and religion have been documented. These are the very conditions that have fueled widespread resentment and tension among the Kashmiri people.
We categorically reject India’s repeated attempts to blame every incident on external interference, while ignoring the failure of its own policies and the repressive approach of its regime. Constantly pointing fingers at Pakistan only exacerbates hostilities and derails genuine peace efforts.
MAPIM calls for:
- The Indian government to immediately end all forms of violence and restrictions on the Kashmiri population.
- The United Nations to conduct a comprehensive and independent investigation into human rights violations in the region.
- The international community to reject the anti-Muslim rhetoric propagated by BJP hardline leaders.
- A genuine peace dialogue to be held unconditionally between India, Pakistan, and representatives of the Kashmiri people.
As long as state-sponsored violence in Kashmir continues, real peace will remain elusive. Modi must be reminded that regional stability cannot be built on oppression and hateful rhetoric.
