PRESS STATEMENT
MAPIM CALLS FOR ASEAN HUMANITARIAN RELIEF FOR AFGHANISTAN EARTHQUAKE
Kuala Lumpur, 4th September 2025
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) expresses its deepest condolences and solidarity with the people of Afghanistan in light of the devastating earthquakes that struck southeastern Afghanistan on 31 August and 2 September 2025. The series of quakes – the strongest being of magnitude 6.0, followed by another of 5.5 at a shallow depth – have tragically claimed more than 1,400 lives, injured over 2,800, and destroyed thousands of homes in remote villages.
MAPIM views this catastrophe not merely as a national tragedy for Afghanistan, but as a regional and humanitarian challenge that demands a collective and immediate response.
- Call for ASEAN Humanitarian Mobilization
MAPIM urges ASEAN member states to act swiftly by mobilizing a coordinated humanitarian relief effort under the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre). Afghanistan, though not an ASEAN member, is part of the larger Asian family, and the spirit of ASEAN solidarity must extend beyond borders in times of dire need. - Humanitarian Diplomacy and International Cooperation
MAPIM stresses that humanitarian aid must transcend political and security considerations. The urgency of the situation requires unhindered access for relief teams, medical support, shelter provision, and long-term reconstruction. We urge the international community, including the United Nations, OIC, and humanitarian partners, to coordinate relief strategies that prioritize the dignity and well-being of the Afghan people. - MAPIM’s Commitment
MAPIM stands ready to collaborate with regional and international partners to channel humanitarian assistance to the affected communities. We believe ASEAN’s collective action, together with global humanitarian networks, will not only provide immediate relief but also demonstrate a shared moral responsibility to humanity. - Prayer and Solidarity
In this moment of immense grief, MAPIM calls upon Muslims worldwide and people of all faiths to uphold the victims of this tragedy in their prayers. We beseech Allah the Most Compassionate to grant mercy to the departed souls, swift recovery to the injured, and strength to the families who have lost their loved ones.
MAPIM reaffirms that in the face of disasters of such magnitude, the principles of compassion, solidarity, and justice must guide all actions. It is in times like these that humanity must rise above differences and extend a helping hand to those in desperate need.
