MAPIM OPEN LETTER TO UN MEMBER STATES
AN ENABLER OF GENOCIDE – Annalena Baerbock Should Not Preside in the 80th UNGA
The election of Annalena Baerbock, former German Foreign Minister, as the President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) raises profound moral and political concerns. While the UNGA is meant to embody the collective conscience of humanity and serve as a beacon of justice for oppressed peoples, Baerbock’s record on the Gaza genocide fundamentally disqualifies her from presiding over the world’s highest multilateral platform.
- Her Rejection of the Genocide Reality
Baerbock has openly denied that Israel’s atrocities in Gaza amount to genocide, despite overwhelming evidence from international observers, humanitarian organizations, and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) proceedings initiated by South Africa. By dismissing the genocide framing, she has positioned herself on the side of impunity and shielded Israel from accountability.
- An Enabler Through Political Cover
Throughout her tenure as Germany’s Foreign Minister, Baerbock consistently defended Israel’s military actions as “self-defense,” even as indiscriminate bombings killed tens of thousands of civilians, flattened neighborhoods, destroyed hospitals, and starved Gaza’s population. Her narrative has enabled Israel to justify ongoing crimes, reinforcing a culture of lawlessness.
- Humanitarian Rhetoric, Political Complicity
While Baerbock repeatedly called for humanitarian pauses and aid access, these statements served as cosmetic cover for Germany’s deeper complicity. Germany remains a top supplier of arms to Israel, making Baerbock’s appeals for “humanitarian relief” contradictory and hollow. Such duplicity exposes her as a politician who cloaks complicity in moralistic language.
- Violation of the Spirit of the UN
The UN Charter upholds human dignity, justice, and accountability. The presiding officer of the UNGA must embody impartiality, credibility, and moral authority. Baerbock’s track record reveals bias, double standards, and an active role in silencing Palestinian suffering. Her leadership risks undermining the legitimacy of UNGA debates on Palestine and other urgent humanitarian crises.
- A Dangerous Precedent
To allow Annalena Baerbock to preside over UNGA 80 is to normalize complicity in genocide. It sends the dangerous message that those who enable mass atrocities can be rewarded with the world’s most symbolic multilateral position. This is a betrayal of the victims in Gaza, a mockery of international law, and an insult to the conscience of humanity.
Conclusion
The world must not remain silent. Member States, civil society, and global public opinion should question Baerbock’s credibility and legitimacy as UNGA President. The leadership of the General Assembly must not be entrusted to an enabler of genocide. If the UN is to maintain its moral standing, it must uphold its principles consistently—otherwise, its role as the voice of humanity will be gravely compromised.
