PRESS STATEMENT
Kuala Lumpur | 28 February 2026
MAPIM views with serious concern the recent developments following the joint military attacks by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which have triggered a dangerous escalation of conflict in the West Asian region.
The reported strikes targeting several major cities, including Tehran, indicate a significant rise in tensions that could potentially ignite a wider regional confrontation.
This conflict does not involve Iran and Israel alone. It carries serious risks to global security stability, international energy routes, and the world economy. Disruption in the Gulf region, which is rich in global energy resources, could have major implications for oil prices, international trade, and the economies of developing nations, including Malaysia.
Malaysia, as a nation that upholds the principles of peace, national sovereignty, and international law, must adopt proactive and principled measures in responding to this crisis.
PROPOSED ACTIONS FOR THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT
MAPIM proposes several strategic measures:
- Firm Position at the International Level
Malaysia should issue an official statement condemning any unilateral military actions that violate the United Nations Charter and the principle of national sovereignty. - Diplomatic Initiatives through ASEAN and OIC
Malaysia can play a constructive role as a voice for peace through:
- ASEAN
- Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)
- Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
to call for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic resolution.
- Support for United Nations Mechanisms
Malaysia should urge an emergency session of the UN Security Council and advocate for the activation of conflict prevention mechanisms to halt escalation. - Protection of Malaysian Citizens in the Middle East
The government should enhance preparedness measures to ensure the safety of Malaysians in high risk areas and prepare emergency evacuation plans if the situation deteriorates. - National Economic and Energy Preparedness
Geopolitical tensions in West Asia may impact global oil prices and trade stability. Malaysia should implement mitigation measures to protect citizens from inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions. - Malaysia’s Role as a Peace Facilitator
Malaysia has a reputation as a moderate and principled diplomatic actor.
The country could offer support for peace negotiations and political solutions that respect the sovereignty of all parties.
MAPIM’S POSITION
MAPIM stresses that war is not a solution to international disputes.
Armed conflict only increases human suffering, deepens regional instability, and undermines global peace.
The world has witnessed the devastating consequences of prolonged wars in West Asia for decades.
Another large scale conflict would bring further destruction without guaranteeing sustainable peace.
Malaysia must stand firmly with the principles of justice, peace, and national sovereignty in confronting this crisis.
Global peace requires moral courage, principled leadership, and decisive diplomatic action.
