STATEMENT ON MODI’S ESCALATORY THREATS AGAINST KASHMIR AND PAKISTAN
14 th May 2025 | Kuala Lumpur
MAPIM (Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations) strongly condemns the inflammatory and aggressive rhetoric by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Adampur airbase, located near the border. In his speech to Indian air force personnel, Modi declared:
“We will not differentiate between the government sponsoring terrorism and the masterminds of terrorism.”
He further warned, “We will enter their dens and hit them without giving them an opportunity to survive.”
Such statements, made by a head of government, are tantamount to a license for indiscriminate military aggression, potentially targeting any entity — state or non-state — without requiring evidence or due process. It signals a dangerous shift towards unilateral violence under the pretext of counterterrorism, undermining international norms and laws.
MAPIM reiterates that these threats do not resolve the central issue — the legitimate and inalienable right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination. Instead, such threats inflame tensions, justify brutal repression in Indian-occupied Kashmir, and bring the region closer to conflict.
We strongly assert:
- The Kashmir conflict is not about terrorism; it is about justice and political rights. Conflating the Kashmiri struggle with terrorism is a deliberate ploy to suppress a people’s right to determine their own destiny.
- Modi’s statement violates international principles of proportionality, sovereignty, and non-aggression, risking escalation between nuclear-armed neighbours and destabilising the region.
- The international community must hold India accountable for its belligerent posture and continuing human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir.
MAPIM urges the Malaysian government and the international community to:
- Reject and condemn such unilateral threats of violence;
- Call for a peaceful and just resolution based on the will of the Kashmiri people, as enshrined in UN Security Council resolutions;
- Reaffirm the commitment to dialogue, diplomacy, and international law.
Only through justice and recognition of legitimate rights can true and lasting peace be achieved in South Asia.
