MEDIA STATEMENT
Muslim Scientists Must Take Active Role in Rebuilding a Civilisationally-Driven Madani Future”
In Conjunction with the Pre-Conference Workshop of Southeast Asian Muslim Scientists
12 June 2025 | Shah Alam, Malaysia
The Pre-Conference Workshop of Southeast Asian Muslim Scientists, held on 12 June 2025 in Shah Alam, strongly affirms that Muslim scientists must assume a proactive and strategic role in reviving a civilisational Islamic legacy grounded in knowledge, ethics, and societal responsibility.
Organised in collaboration with academic institutions, Islamic organisations, and regional networks of scientists, this workshop serves as a critical platform to mobilise thought leadership, build regional cooperation, and design a shared scientific agenda aligned with maqasid al-shariah and universal human values.
- Science and Knowledge as Pillars of a Madani Civilisation
The workshop emphasised that science must not be divorced from moral and spiritual dimensions. Muslim scientists are called upon to balance scientific and technological advancement with sensitivity to human dignity, environmental stewardship, and social justice.
A true Madani civilisation demands science that solves problems – not one that exploits or destroys.
- Muslim Scientists Must Shape Their Own Agenda
Participants voiced the urgent need for Muslim scientists to formulate an independent and values-driven scientific agenda, free from the dominance of global superpowers. This includes:
Reassessing STEM education policies in Muslim countries,
Strengthening intra-regional scientific collaboration, and
Establishing centres of excellence rooted in Islamic ethical principles.
- Responding to Global Crises: A Moral Responsibility
In the face of worsening climate, health, technological, and economic crises, Muslim scientists are urged to provide alternative solutions guided by ethics and the higher objectives of Islamic law (maqasid al-shariah).
Science is not merely a tool for innovation – it must serve humanity and uphold justice.
- A First Step Toward Uniting Regional Muslim Scientists
This pre-conference workshop is a foundational effort toward the upcoming Southeast Asian Muslim Scientists Conference, which aims to produce a joint declaration, an action plan, and the formation of a Regional Muslim Scientists Network (JASMI).
Conclusion
The workshop calls upon all Muslim scientists to reclaim their role as heirs to prophetic knowledge, agents of ummatic revival, and architects of a future civilisation that balances spirituality with progress.
The Madani future will only be realised when science is driven by faith and guided by divine values.
