Press Statement
11th March 2025
The Malaysian Consultation Council Islamic Organizations ( MAPIM )
fully supports Qatar’s demand for Israel’s nuclear program to be subjected to oversight by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). It is unacceptable that Israel, a known nuclear power, continues to evade international scrutiny and remains outside the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) while aggressively condemning other nations over their nuclear ambitions.
- Israel’s Nuclear Program – A Threat to Regional and Global Security
Israel’s nuclear opacity—refusing to confirm or deny its possession of nuclear weapons—creates a dangerous precedent in the Middle East. Reports indicate that Israel possesses at least 80 to 400 nuclear warheads, making it the only nuclear-armed state in the region. Despite this, Israel refuses to sign the NPT or allow IAEA inspections. This double standard undermines global non-proliferation efforts and poses a significant security threat to the Middle East.
- The Hypocrisy of Western Powers
The United States and its allies have persistently enforced sanctions and military interventions against nations they accuse of pursuing nuclear weapons, such as Iran and Iraq in the past, yet they turn a blind eye to Israel’s nuclear capabilities. This hypocrisy weakens global non-proliferation treaties and fuels instability in the region. If nations like Iran are heavily scrutinized under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Israel must also be subjected to the same level of transparency and accountability.
- The Need for IAEA Inspections and NPT Compliance
MAPIM joins Qatar and other nations in calling for:
IAEA inspections of Israel’s nuclear facilities to ensure transparency.
Israel’s immediate signing and ratification of the NPT to prevent nuclear proliferation in the region.
Sanctions against Israel if it continues to evade international nuclear oversight.
A Middle East Nuclear-Weapons-Free Zone (MENWFZ), which has been repeatedly proposed at the United Nations but consistently blocked by Israel and its allies.
- Israel Cannot Be Allowed to Operate with Impunity
For decades, Israel has acted with complete impunity—violating international law, occupying Palestinian land, committing war crimes in Gaza, and maintaining a nuclear arsenal without oversight. This unchecked power must be challenged by the global community. MAPIM calls on Muslim-majority nations, particularly the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), to exert diplomatic and economic pressure to hold Israel accountable.
- MAPIM’s Stand – Strengthening Global Advocacy
MAPIM urges:
- The Malaysian government to take a firm diplomatic stance at the United Nations and IAEA in demanding nuclear accountability for Israel.
- The OIC and Arab League to unite in lobbying for sanctions against Israel until it complies with international nuclear regulations.
- The global civil society movement to increase pressure on Israel through campaigns such as Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) to force compliance.
MAPIM reaffirms its full support for Qatar’s position and calls upon the international community to end the double standards regarding Israel’s nuclear program. The world cannot allow a rogue nuclear state to continue destabilizing the Middle East while enjoying full protection from Western powers. Israel must be held accountable.
