March 20, 2025PRESS RELEASE
March 19, 2025
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) strongly condemns the escalating religious violence in India, particularly the recent riots in Nagpur, Maharashtra, which have seen attacks on the Muslim community, violence, and destruction of property.
MAPIM denounces the failure of the Indian government under Narendra Modi to control the rise of Hindu nationalist groups that openly target mosques, Islamic institutions, and the Muslim minority.
LATEST INCIDENT IN NAGPUR: ESCALATING RELIGIOUS DIVISION
On March 17, 2025, Nagpur, Maharashtra became the epicenter of violent riots between Hindu extremists and the Muslim community. The violence erupted after Hindu nationalist groups staged protests demanding the demolition of the tomb of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, which they view as a symbol of Hindu oppression.
The situation worsened after rumors spread that Islamic religious objects, including the Quran, were burned, provoking anger among the Muslim community. Clashes resulted in at least 34 police officers and five civilians being injured, while several homes and vehicles were set on fire.
In response, Indian authorities imposed an indefinite curfew in several areas on March 18, 2025, and arrested more than 50 individuals in an attempt to control the unrest.
MAPIM sees this incident as further proof that Islamophobia is deeply entrenched in India, where the Muslim community has increasingly become a target of violence and discrimination since Narendra Modi took office in 2014.
MAPIM DEMANDS THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT TO:
1️⃣ Take firm action against Hindu nationalist groups involved in attacks against Muslims and their places of worship.
2️⃣ Ensure the safety of mosques, Islamic institutions, and the Muslim community from violence and intimidation.
3️⃣ End discriminatory policies against Muslims in legal, economic, and social aspects.
4️⃣ Uphold the secular principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution and protect religious freedom without bias.
MAPIM URGES THE OIC TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION
🔴 The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) must issue an official condemnation and convene an emergency session to address the ongoing persecution of Muslims in India.
🔴 Islamic nations should consider diplomatic and economic measures against India if the Modi government fails to stop violence against Muslims.
🔴 MAPIM calls on Muslims worldwide to stand in solidarity with India’s Muslim minority and pressure the international community to take decisive action for justice.
CONCLUSION: END ISLAMOPHOBIA, PROTECT MUSLIM MINORITIES IN INDIA!
MAPIM emphasizes that the rise of Islamophobia in India is a serious threat to peace and human rights. The Indian government’s failure to control Hindu extremists has led to systematic attacks against Muslims, and this injustice must not be ignored.
The violence against Muslim minorities must end, and the world must not remain silent in the face of this oppression.
Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid
President, Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM)
