MAPIM STATEMENT
TRUMP’S VISIT TO MALAYSIA FOR ASEAN–US SUMMIT: PEOPLE’S RESENTMENTS MUST BE RESPECTED IN LIGHT OF HIS COMPLICITY WITH ISRAEL’S GENOCIDE
Date: 2 October 2025
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) strongly urges the Government of Malaysia and ASEAN leaders to respect the legitimate resentment of the people regarding the visit of former US President Donald Trump to Malaysia for the ASEAN–US Summit.
Trump’s political record is stained with complicity in Israel’s genocide and apartheid policies against the Palestinian people. His actions as President – including the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, legitimizing illegal settlements, and advancing the so-called “Deal of the Century” – were direct assaults on Palestinian sovereignty and human dignity. His recent “20-Point Gaza Peace Proposal” is nothing more than a cynical cover-up of Israel’s ongoing genocide.
To welcome Trump to Malaysia without addressing this complicity would be a grave insult to the conscience of Malaysians and to the global solidarity movement for Palestine.
MAPIM asserts the following:
- The people’s resentment is legitimate and must be respected. Malaysians, particularly the Muslim majority, have consistently rejected any association with leaders who enable Israel’s war crimes. Ignoring these sentiments undermines democracy and erodes the moral credibility of the government.
- Trump’s presence cannot be normalized. Hosting him as a statesman without conditions sends the dangerous message that genocide can be ignored in the name of geopolitics and trade.
- The Government of Malaysia must act with moral courage. If Trump is received, he must be confronted directly and publicly over his complicity in Israel’s crimes. Anything less is a betrayal of our consistent pro-Palestine stance.
- ASEAN must not become complicit in genocide. As the Summit convenes, the collective voice of ASEAN should demand an end to Israel’s illegal blockade, genocide, and apartheid, rather than offering a platform that whitewashes the role of enablers.
MAPIM reminds all leaders: welcoming Trump without accountability is not neutrality, it is acquiescence. It betrays the suffering of 2.3 million Palestinians under siege in Gaza and aligns ASEAN with injustice.
We therefore call on the Malaysian Government:
■ To raise Palestine as a core agenda item during the Summit.
■ To issue a clear, uncompromising stand against Trump’s complicity in Israel’s crimes.
■ To ensure that Malaysia’s hospitality is not misinterpreted as endorsement of genocide.
History will not only judge the oppressors but also those who stood silently beside them. MAPIM stands with the people’s voice: Trump’s presence in Malaysia must not be sanitized, and Palestine must remain the moral compass of our diplomacy.
