SUPPORT UN CHIEF FOR GLOBAL ACTION AGAINST RISING ANTI-MUSLIM BIGOTRY
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) strongly condemns the alarming rise of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim bigotry in India and Western nations, which has led to increasing discrimination, hate crimes, and violence against Muslim communities.
MAPIM fully supports the call by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for global action to combat this disturbing trend. His statement on the International Day to Combat Islamophobia today 15th March serves as a crucial reminder of the urgent need for governments and online platforms to take serious measures in tackling anti-Muslim discrimination, hate speech, and policies that marginalize Muslim populations.
ESCALATING ISLAMOPHOBIA: A GLOBAL CRISIS
Reports from human rights organizations and the UN indicate a surge in racial profiling, discriminatory policies, and violent attacks targeting Muslims worldwide. This pattern has been particularly severe in India and Western nations, where far-right rhetoric and biased media narratives have fueled public hostility towards Muslims.
In India, the rise of Hindutva-driven nationalism has resulted in mob violence, discriminatory laws, and suppression of Muslim rights.
In Western nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, and European countries, anti-Muslim bias has intensified, with hateful rhetoric being normalized in political discourse, media, and public institutions.
Pro-Palestinian activists, particularly those advocating against Israel’s war on Gaza, are being unjustly labeled and targeted, further escalating Islamophobic sentiments.
MAPIM’S DEMANDS FOR URGENT ACTION
We urge the international community to take immediate and decisive action to combat Islamophobia:
- Governments must enact stronger legal protections against religious discrimination and hate crimes, ensuring that Muslims are not unfairly profiled, targeted, or criminalized.
- Western nations must halt the suppression of pro-Palestinian advocacy, as criticizing Israel’s occupation and war crimes should not be equated with extremism.
- India must be held accountable for its escalating anti-Muslim policies, including the suppression of Muslim voices, violence against minorities, and institutionalized discrimination.
- Social media and digital platforms must actively curb Islamophobic hate speech and misinformation, which have fueled hostility and led to real-world violence.
- The UN and global human rights bodies must establish mechanisms to monitor and take action against governments, media outlets, and political figures that promote anti-Muslim hatred. A GLOBAL RESPONSIBILITY
Islamophobia is not just a Muslim issue—it is a threat to global peace, human rights, and social harmony. The failure to address it legitimizes discrimination, emboldens extremists, and deepens divisions within societies. The international community must act decisively and without delay.
MAPIM calls upon all leaders, human rights defenders, and civil society organizations to stand in solidarity against Islamophobia. We must collectively resist bigotry and demand justice for Muslim communities worldwide.
