We acknowledge Senator Bernie Sanders’ effort to introduce resolutions aimed at halting U.S. arms transfers to Israel. It is a critical first step—but an incomplete one.
Senator Sanders, we urge you to take a principled stand rooted in historical truth, not just political caution.
Long Before October 7, 2023, the people of Gaza have endured a brutal and unrelenting siege for over 17 years. Their lives have been strangled by Israel’s blockade—restricting food, medicine, energy, and essential goods. Three full-scale military assaults—2008/2009 (Operation Cast Lead), 2014 (Operation Protective Edge), and 2021 (Operation Guardian of the Walls)— even these massive attocities have turned Gaza into rubble, killing and maiming thousands, the vast majority of them civilians, including children.
You must be vreminded that in those assaults also schools, hospitals, media offices, residential towers—nothing has been spared. Infrastructure has been intentionally destroyed, and humanitarian aid has been deliberately obstructed. This is not collateral damage. This is systemic punishment.
The events of October 7th must be understood in context—not isolated from 75 years of occupation, dispossession, and apartheid. Israel cannot be portrayed as a perpetual victim while it has maintained a regime of oppression against the Palestinian people, both in Gaza and the West Bank.
The claims of 1,200 innocent Israeli lives lost must be viewed with clarity. Independent investigations have suggested that many were combatants or armed settlers, and that a number were tragically killed during Israeli counterfire. Yet, this number is constantly amplified to justify genocidal retaliation against over 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza.
Let us be clear: “Barbarism” is too mild a term for what Israel is doing. It is the manifestation of pure evil—genocide and ethnic cleansing in real time.
Senator Sanders, we respect your courage—but your silence on the right of the Palestinian people to resist, to live in dignity, and to reclaim their land is troubling. Your resolutions, while welcome, must not sanitize history.
Justice cannot begin on October 7, 2023. It must begin in 1948—with the Nakba—and extend through every massacre, land grab, and racist law enforced since then.
Only when the world sees the Palestinians as a people with rights—not merely as victims—can we begin to move toward real peace.
