Hungary’s Immoral Defiance of International Justice Condemned: Failure to Arrest ICC Fugitives and Withdrawal from ICC a Grave Breach of Global Accountability
MAPIM strongly condemns the government of Hungary for its blatant refusal to arrest two individuals under active warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), followed by its shameless and politically motivated decision to withdraw from the Court altogether.
Hungary’s actions represent a severe breach of its obligations under international law and a direct assault on the global framework of justice established to prevent impunity for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.
“The Hungarian government’s refusal to cooperate with the ICC and its decision to exit the Court is not only immoral—it is a clear betrayal of the international community’s shared commitment to justice.
Such conduct emboldens violators of human rights and erodes the very institutions that exist to protect the vulnerable and hold the powerful accountable.
The ICC stands as one of the most important mechanisms for justice in the modern world. Hungary’s withdrawal sends a dangerous message that politics will be prioritized over principle and that impunity will be tolerated for the sake of geopolitical expediency.
We call on all ICC member states and the international community at large to condemn Hungary’s actions, to reinforce the authority of the ICC, and to ensure that all state parties fulfill their obligations without fear or favor.
Justice must not be abandoned. The world must not remain silent.
