PRESS STATEMENT
India’s Unprovoked Act of War – A Reckless Escalation Towards Regional Catastrophe
Issued by: MAPIM – Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations
Date: 8 th May 2025
In the face of rising tensions between two nuclear-armed neighbors, we, the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM), condemn in the strongest possible terms India’s unprovoked and illegal military aggression against the sovereign territory of Pakistan. This blatant act of war is not only a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, but a direct assault on regional peace and international legal norms.
According to verified reports:
The Indian Air Force launched a cross-border assault using standoff weapons, targeting civilian populations in six separate locations: Muridke, Sialkot, Shakargarh, Bahawalpur, and across the Line of Control in Kotli and Muzaffarabad, in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
A total of 24 precision-guided munitions were used, resulting in the martyrdom of 27 innocent civilians and injuries to 57 others, including children as young as three years old and women, many of whom remain in critical condition.
This aggression was not only a violation of the UN Charter, but an open challenge to international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, which expressly prohibit the targeting of civilians and non-military infrastructure.
Even more egregiously:
India targeted the Neelum–Jhelum Hydropower Project, a critical dam facility. This is an attack on civilian infrastructure and constitutes a war crime under international law, which forbids such actions against utilities crucial for civilian survival.
Indian forces also targeted mosques, further inflaming religious sensitivities and committing acts of sacrilege, in clear violation of the Hague Conventions protecting religious sites.
Despite this unprovoked assault:
The Pakistan Armed Forces have exercised strategic restraint, but successfully shot down 5 Indian jets—including 3 Rafale fighters, 1 Su-30, 1 Mig-29, and 1 Heron UAV—all of which were involved in the aggression.
The pretext for this reckless military aggression stems from the Pahalgam attack, an incident India has used without substantiated evidence to once again frame Pakistan and justify its war-mongering. India continues to exploit the narrative of “terrorism” as a convenient cover to oppress the people of Jammu and Kashmir, deny their right to self-determination, and escalate regional tensions.
Let it be clear:
Pakistan, like every sovereign nation, has the inherent right to self-defense as enshrined in Article 51 of the United Nations Charter. Islamabad has declared that it will issue a measured and calibrated response at a time and place of its choosing. Any further escalation by India will be solely its responsibility.
MAPIM Demands:
- The United Nations Security Council must convene an emergency session to address this illegal act of war and prevent further escalation.
- The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) must take a firm, united stand in defense of a fellow Muslim nation under threat and issue a clear condemnation of India’s aggression.
- The international community, especially nuclear-armed powers and global peace actors, must exert maximum diplomatic pressure on India to halt further military action and return to dialogue.
- A neutral, international investigation into the Pahalgam incident and the subsequent Indian aggression must be initiated to establish facts and dispel disinformation.
This is not merely a regional crisis. It is a grave threat to global peace and security. The world must not remain indifferent while nationalist extremism and militarism push South Asia toward nuclear confrontation.
To India we say: war is not a solution. Reckless adventurism will only reap destruction. The path forward must be grounded in justice, dialogue, and respect for international law.
To the world, we say: do not gamble with the future of humanity by allowing impunity for aggression. Silence today will be remembered as complicity tomorrow.
