PRESS STATEMENT

MAPIM EXTENDS TAKZIAH TO THE FAMILY OF
Sharif Osman Hadi
LEADER OF THE 2024 STUDENT UPRISING IN Bangladesh
Kuala Lumpur | For Immediate Release
The MAPIM extends its deepest takziah and heartfelt condolences to the family of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent leader of the Bangladesh Student Uprising of 2024, following his tragic death which has shaken the conscience of the nation.
MAPIM notes that Bangladesh is observing a national day of mourning, with tens of thousands of citizens gathering in Dhaka as funeral prayers were held at the Dhaka University Central Mosque, a powerful reflection of the profound respect and grief felt by the people. His death has triggered two consecutive days of mass protests across the country, underscoring the depth of public anger and sorrow.
Sharif Osman Hadi symbolised the moral courage of a generation. As a student activist, he stood at the forefront of the 2024 uprising, demanding accountability, justice, and political reform through popular mobilisation. His killing is not merely the loss of an individual, but a grave assault on the right of youth to participate peacefully in shaping the future of their nation.
MAPIM condemns all forms of violence and repression against students and peaceful activists. The killing of a student leader represents a serious violation of fundamental human rights, including the right to life, freedom of expression, and freedom of peaceful assembly. History has shown that silencing student voices only deepens instability and widens the gap between the people and those in power.
MAPIM stands in full solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, particularly its students, families of victims, and civil society actors who continue to call for truth, justice, and accountability. We call upon the Bangladeshi authorities to ensure an independent, transparent, and credible investigation into the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, and to bring all those responsible to justice without fear or favour.
MAPIM also urges the international community, regional organisations, and human rights bodies to closely monitor developments in Bangladesh and to uphold the protection of democratic space, youth participation, and human dignity.
May Allah grant patience and strength to the family of Sharif Osman Hadi, accept his sacrifice among those who stood for truth and justice, and guide Bangladesh towards peace, reconciliation, and a future rooted in dignity and accountability.
Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid
President
Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM)
