PRESS STATEMENT
22 February 2026
The Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM) views the recent statements by the Foreign Minister of Iran indicating readiness for diplomatic engagement and confidence building measures in exchange for sanctions relief as a constructive and responsible approach toward de escalation.
At a time when global tensions are rising and military confrontation is being openly discussed, any commitment to dialogue rather than war deserves serious international support.
MAPIM believes that Iran’s willingness to pursue diplomacy demonstrates a rational path forward that prioritizes regional stability, economic recovery and the avoidance of catastrophic conflict. The alternative scenario, particularly any military strike, would risk igniting a wider regional war with global consequences.
The possibility of escalation cannot be viewed in isolation. The Middle East is already experiencing severe instability due to ongoing conflicts, humanitarian crises and geopolitical rivalries. A new war involving Iran would dramatically increase insecurity across the region, disrupt global energy markets and potentially trigger a broader international confrontation.
MAPIM expresses deep concern that political pressures and strategic alignments could push the United States toward military action despite diplomatic openings.
Any perception that foreign policy decisions are being driven by the strategic interests of another state rather than independent assessment of global peace risks undermines international confidence and stability.
War with Iran would not be a limited event. It would carry unpredictable consequences affecting civilian populations, regional economies and international security architecture.
MAPIM therefore calls upon:
- The United States administration to prioritize diplomatic negotiations and avoid military escalation.
- The United Nations and international community to support dialogue mechanisms that reduce tensions.
- Regional actors to exercise restraint and promote peaceful engagement.
- The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to play a proactive diplomatic role in preventing conflict.
Peaceful resolution of disputes remains the only sustainable path forward.
The world does not need another war. It needs leadership grounded in wisdom, restraint and respect for international law.
Preventing conflict with Iran is not only a regional necessity. It is a global responsibility.
Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid
