Kuala Lumpur, [Date] – The Malaysian Palestinian Workers Union (MPWU) strongly condemns the unprecedented and systematic targeting of Palestinian journalists by the Israeli military. We stand in solidarity with media professionals who risk their lives to report on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine.
According to Frank Smyth, senior adviser to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the number of Palestinian journalists killed in recent months is unprecedented. This deliberate targeting of the press is a clear violation of international humanitarian law and the fundamental right to freedom of the press. Journalists play a crucial role in documenting war crimes and human rights violations, and their killings serve as an attempt to silence the truth.
MPWU demands the following:
- International Accountability – We call on the United Nations, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and other global human rights organizations to launch an independent investigation into the killings of journalists and hold Israel accountable for these war crimes.
- Protection of Journalists – We urge the international community, including media organizations and human rights groups, to implement stronger measures to protect journalists working in conflict zones, particularly in Palestine.
- Immediate Ceasefire and End to Attacks on Press Freedom – The Israeli military must cease all attacks on journalists and media infrastructure to ensure the free flow of information.
- Sanctions Against Israel for Violations of International Law – Governments worldwide must impose diplomatic and economic measures against Israel for its blatant disregard for human rights and press freedom.
MPWU reaffirms our unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their right to self-determination. We call on all Malaysians, civil society organizations, and international allies to stand in solidarity and demand justice for the journalists who have been targeted and killed.
