Pakistan–India Ceasefire: Now Focus on the Core Issue—Justice and Self-Determination for Kashmir
MAPIM welcomes the maintenance of the ceasefire between Pakistan and India along the Line of Control (LoC). However, we firmly assert that a ceasefire alone is not a solution—it is merely a pause in a long-standing and unresolved conflict.
The central issue remains: the inalienable right of the people of Kashmir to their land, identity, and self-determination. Without addressing this core political and human rights question, any military truce will remain fragile and incomplete.
For over seven decades, the Kashmiri people have endured occupation, mass arrests, demographic engineering, curfews, censorship, and severe human rights violations. Since the revocation of Article 370 by the Indian government in 2019, the situation has worsened, with increased militarization and suppression of civil liberties.
The Ceasefire Must Not Be a Cover-Up
We caution the international community and regional actors not to mistake the ceasefire for peace. True peace will only emerge when:
The Kashmiri people are allowed to exercise their UN-recognized right to self-determination.
India reverses its illegal measures aimed at altering the demographic and political character of Jammu and Kashmir.
All forms of repression, arbitrary detention, and collective punishment against Kashmiris are ended.
Double Standards Must Be Confronted
The international community’s selective concern—pressuring for ceasefire between India and Pakistan while ignoring the brutal occupation of Kashmir—reflects a troubling double standard. The same applies to the silence on the genocide in Gaza, where Palestinian demands for justice are ignored in favor of geopolitical interests.
MAPIM’s Call
We reiterate our strong support for the people of Kashmir in their just struggle. We call upon:
- The United Nations to implement its resolutions on Kashmir without further delay.
- The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to escalate diplomatic and legal efforts to support Kashmir at all international platforms.
- The Government of India to end all repressive laws, withdraw its military presence, and allow an internationally supervised plebiscite.
Peace in South Asia is impossible without justice in Kashmir. A ceasefire without freedom is an illusion. The time has come to resolve the root cause—the denial of the Kashmiri people’s rights.
