Press Statement
29th July 2025
The Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organization (MAPIM) welcomes with great relief the announcement of a ceasefire agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, brokered under the mediation of the Government of Malaysia, in line with the ASEAN spirit of peace, unity, and mutual respect.
We commend both the Governments of Thailand and Cambodia for choosing the path of dialogue over conflict, and for demonstrating maturity and responsibility in ending hostilities through peaceful means.
MAPIM applauds Malaysia’s diplomatic initiative and moral leadership in facilitating this breakthrough, reflecting its unwavering commitment to regional stability and the principles enshrined in the ASEAN Charter.
The ceasefire comes at a critical time, when rising tensions threatened to destabilize not only bilateral relations but also the broader Southeast Asian region. The swift intervention by Malaysia — with the quiet support of other ASEAN member states — is a triumph of preventive diplomacy, and reaffirms that ASEAN’s foundational values are not mere rhetoric but living principles.
We reiterate the following:
- Gratitude to Malaysia for its principled mediation role, ensuring that diplomacy and ASEAN solidarity prevail over militarism.
- Respect to Thailand and Cambodia for placing regional harmony and the welfare of their people above political and territorial confrontation.
- A call for the establishment of an ASEAN Border Peace Mechanism to monitor and de-escalate future disputes before they spiral into violence.
- Continued humanitarian support for communities affected by the brief but damaging conflict, especially along the border areas.
MAPIM urges all ASEAN members to draw lessons from this episode: unity is our strength, and diplomacy is our shield. The region must never fall prey to division, militarism, or external manipulation that undermines our peace.
Let this ceasefire be not only the end of conflict, but the beginning of a renewed era of regional trust, reconciliation, and cooperation. Let us build an ASEAN where every dispute is resolved through wisdom, and every challenge met with unity.
Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid
President,
Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM)
