PRESS STATEMENT

ROHINGYA GENOCIDE REMEMBRANCE DAY – 25th AUGUST :
WORLD MUST REMEMBER AND DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY
Issued by: Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM)
Date: 26 August 2025
On 25th August, the world must pause to remember the darkest chapter of our times – the genocide committed against the Rohingya people in Myanmar. This date marks the systematic and brutal persecution that forced more than 750,000 Rohingya, mostly women and children, to flee from Rakhine State to Bangladesh and other countries in the region since 2017.
The atrocities carried out by the Myanmar military included mass killings, burning of villages, sexual violence, forced displacement, and denial of citizenship rights. These crimes were not only acts of ethnic cleansing but constitute genocide as recognized by international investigations, including by the United Nations Independent Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar.
The world must not allow the Rohingya genocide to fade from memory. Silence and forgetfulness would only embolden perpetrators and perpetuate cycles of impunity.
MAPIM reiterates the following urgent calls:
- International Accountability: The International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) must expedite proceedings against Myanmar’s military junta and ensure justice is delivered for the victims.
- Humanitarian Protection: ASEAN, OIC, and the UN must establish stronger mechanisms for the protection of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, Malaysia, and elsewhere, ensuring their dignity, safety, and rights.
- Right of Return: The Rohingya must be guaranteed safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation to their homeland with full citizenship rights restored, as mandated by international law.
- Global Solidarity: Civil society, faith groups, and governments worldwide must intensify advocacy to keep the plight of the Rohingya alive in the global conscience.
The Rohingya genocide is not just a tragedy of Myanmar, but a moral test for humanity. To remember is to resist denial, to demand justice is to defend human dignity.
MAPIM stands with the Rohingya people in their struggle for justice and human rights, and we call upon the international community to renew its commitment: Never Again must mean Never Again.
