WHY 5TH JANUARY MUST CONTINUE TO BE REMEMBERED
January 6, 2026MAPIM RESPONSE ON THE SITUATION IN IRAN
January 9, 2026MAPIM CONDEMNS US AGGRESSION, DISMISSAL OF INTERNATIONAL LAW, AND VIOLATION OF STATE SOVEREIGNTY
Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM) expresses its strong condemnation of the recent military action carried out by the United States Government that resulted in the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and the broader policy posture dismissing international law as a constraint on unilateral actions by powerful states.
The operation conducted on 3 January 2026, which involved military strikes in Venezuela and the capture of its sitting head of state, represents a serious violation of fundamental principles of international law and the United Nations Charter, particularly the prohibition on the use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of any state without its consent or a UN mandate.
MAPIM is deeply concerned by statements from the U.S. President asserting that only his own morality constrains aggressive policies, effectively dismissing the role of international law and multilateral norms that were established to preserve peace, security, and sovereign equality among nations.
The United Nations Human Rights Office and independent experts have already condemned the military action and blockade against Venezuela, highlighting that such measures undermine the international legal order, risk regional destabilisation, and set a dangerous precedent that could embolden other powers to disregard established norms.
MAPIM reiterates the following principles:
● Respect for Sovereignty and International Law
Sovereignty and territorial integrity are core pillars of a peaceful international order. Unilateral military interventions without UN authorisation or clear threat justification weaken this order and erode trust among nations.
● Rule of Law Over Power Politics
International law cannot be dismissed or replaced by subjective interpretations of morality. The global community must uphold legal frameworks that protect weaker states against coercion and aggression.
● Peaceful Resolution and Dialogue
Conflicts and accountability must be pursued through diplomatic, legal, and multilateral channels, not through force that exacerbates human suffering and instability.
● Human Life and Humanitarian Norms
Violence against civilians, destruction of infrastructure, and actions that lead to loss of life, displacement, or chaos are unacceptable. Responses to any alleged wrongdoing must be measured, proportionate, and compliant with human rights and humanitarian law.
MAPIM calls on all states, multilateral institutions, and civil society to:
●Reaffirm their commitment to the UN Charter and international law
●Demand transparency and accountability for actions that violate sovereign rights.
●Support peaceful approaches to justice and conflict resolution that do not escalate regional tensions.
●Resist the normalization of force as a tool of policy under the guise of unilateral morality.
We stand in solidarity with all peoples whose rights and dignity are undermined by hegemonic policies that place power above law, and we urge responsible leadership for a just and peaceful world.
Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid
President MAPIM
