PRESS STATEMENT
US PLAN FOR REGIME CHANGE IN IRAN WILL FAIL
11 January 2026 | Kuala Lumpur
Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM) views with grave concern the escalating statements and actions by the United States leadership aimed at exploiting internal unrest in Iran as a pathway toward regime change. Recent remarks by Donald Trump, coupled with open political backing for destabilising protests, reflect a familiar and dangerous pattern of external interference.
MAPIM states clearly: any externally driven attempt at regime change in Iran will fail, just as similar projects have failed across the Middle East, Latin America, and the Global South.
- Economic Grievances Do Not Justify Foreign Intervention
MAPIM recognises that Iran is facing serious internal challenges, including rising living costs, inflation, and public frustration. These are real socio economic issues that must be addressed domestically. However, such grievances do not grant foreign powers the right to:
●interfere in a sovereign state
●issue military threats
weaponise protests for geopolitical objectives
●Economic hardship must never be manipulated into a justification for destabilisation or external domination. - A Recycled Regime Change Playbook
MAPIM observes that the US approach toward Iran follows a well worn regime change script:
●public endorsement of protesters by foreign officials
●economic strangulation through sanctions
information warfare and internet manipulation
●threats of military force
promotion of exile figures and proxy leadership
This model has been applied in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Venezuela, and elsewhere, leaving behind chaos, fragmentation, and humanitarian catastrophe, not democracy or stability.
- Iran Is Not a Weak or Isolated State
Unlike states previously targeted for regime change, Iran possesses:
●strong national institutions
●deep historical memory of foreign intervention
●significant internal cohesion when sovereignty is threatened
●a population acutely aware of the cost of foreign domination
●Attempts to impose political outcomes through pressure or force will only strengthen nationalist resistance, not weaken it. - Dangerous Militarisation of Rhetoric
MAPIM condemns statements implying military action if US defined “red lines” are crossed. Such rhetoric:
●violates the UN Charter
●risks regional escalation
●endangers civilian lives
●undermines any genuine path toward de escalation
Threatening force under the pretext of “protecting protesters” is neither humanitarian nor lawful.
- Double Standards and Moral Bankruptcy
MAPIM notes the glaring hypocrisy of a power that:
●supports occupation and genocide in Palestine
●abducts a sitting president in Venezuela
●threatens annexation of Greenland
●now claims moral authority to decide Iran’s future
This is not concern for human rights. It is imperial arrogance.
- MAPIM’s POSITION
MAPIM affirms:
●Iran’s future must be decided only by the Iranian people
●protests must not be hijacked by foreign agendas
●violence against civilians from any side must be avoided
●sanctions and collective punishment must end
●dialogue, reform, and justice cannot be imposed by force - Strategic Reality
History is clear.
●Regime change imposed from outside never produces legitimacy, stability, or peace.
●It produces resentment, resistance, and long term conflict.
The US should focus on addressing its own internal crises rather than exporting instability abroad.
MAPIM CALLS FOR
●Respect for Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity
●An end to threats of military action and coercive interference
●Protection of civilians and avoidance of excessive force
●International consistency in upholding international law
●Regional dialogue grounded in justice, not domination
MAPIM reiterates that the Muslim world and Global South must remain vigilant against efforts to normalise foreign engineered regime change under deceptive humanitarian narratives.
Peace cannot be built on coercion.
Stability cannot be born from threats.
And sovereignty cannot be negotiated at gunpoint.
