MAPIM STRONGLY CONDEMNS ANTI-MUSLIM TARGETING IN INDIA FOLLOWING PAHALGAM ATTACK
Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) expresses grave concern and strongly condemns the rising wave of anti-Muslim hate, harassment, and violence in India following the Pahalgam attack. The targeting of Muslim businesses, shopkeepers, and ordinary vendors—based purely on religious identity—marks a dangerous escalation of communal polarization driven by unchecked online hate and majoritarian political narratives.
According to the Sabrang India report, the incident has triggered not only digital hate campaigns but also physical intimidation and socio-economic boycotts, severely undermining the fabric of a plural, democratic society. This wave of Islamophobic sentiment—amplified by right-wing platforms and tolerated by silence from ruling elites—reflects a broader pattern of scapegoating Muslims to serve political ends.
We ask: Is the BJP, in its lust for power and entrenchment of Hindutva ideology, sowing the seeds of a second partition?
MAPIM warns that the unchecked propagation of communal hatred, state complicity, and the politicization of religion are not only detrimental to Indian Muslims but are a threat to India’s own national unity, constitutional values, and stability. The consequences of such divisive policies are already manifesting in the marginalization and criminalization of entire communities.
MAPIM calls on:
- The Government of India to immediately curb hate speech and ensure the protection of all its citizens regardless of faith.
- The United Nations and OIC to send fact-finding missions to investigate the rise of religious persecution and economic apartheid in India.
- Global civil society, media, and interfaith organizations to condemn the weaponization of religion and to stand in solidarity with Indian Muslims facing systemic injustice.
- ASEAN and South Asian neighbours to raise the issue of minority rights abuses in regional diplomatic forums.
MAPIM stands in solidarity with the Muslim community in India and reiterates that the struggle against hatred and bigotry is a global moral obligation.
Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid
President, MAPIM
