MAPIM REAFFIRMS: ASEAN MUST NOT BECOME A BATTLEFIELD
Thailand Ready for War with Cambodia – A Serious Warning for the Region
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) expresses grave concern over recent provocative statements and signals suggesting Thailand’s readiness for war with Cambodia, which have been widely circulated in the media.
This development is not only alarming but also a dangerous sign for the stability of the ASEAN region, which has long been built on the principles of peace, cooperation, and dialogue.
MAPIM strongly affirms that the ASEAN region must not be turned into a new theatre of war, especially when the world is already grappling with multiple crises such as those in Palestine, Ukraine, and Sudan. Any militaristic action by an ASEAN member state is a betrayal of the ASEAN spirit as a Zone of Peace, Freedom, and Neutrality (ZOPFAN).
We remind all concerned that:
●ASEAN was founded on principles of peaceful resolution, not armed conflict.
●The people of this region have the right to live in a stable, peaceful, and secure environment.
●War between neighbouring countries will only bring suffering to the people, economic devastation, refugee crises, and widespread geopolitical instability.
MAPIM urges ASEAN leaders to act immediately:
- Urge both Thailand and Cambodia to exercise restraint and return to the negotiation table.
- Activate ASEAN’s conflict resolution mechanisms through effective diplomatic engagement and dialogue.
- Prevent any external powers from interfering in ways that would worsen the situation and manipulate ASEAN as a tool in major power geopolitics.
MAPIM also calls upon civil society, religious scholars, and grassroots movements across ASEAN to unite in rejecting war and advocating for peaceful resolutions. This region must not be allowed to fall prey to power-hungry interests, political egos, and exploitation by vested parties.
Peace in ASEAN is a shared responsibility. Let not the greed of a few crush the hopes of millions.
