MAPIM: Banning Alcohol on Malaysia Airlines Will Not Affect Its Competitiveness
The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM) asserts that banning alcohol on Malaysia Airlines will not undermine its competitiveness. On the contrary, such a move would strengthen the airline’s brand integrity, align with national values, and attract a growing global market that respects ethical and halal-conscious standards.
MAPIM emphasizes that competitiveness is not defined by the serving of alcohol, but by the quality of service, safety, comfort, and the cultural identity an airline represents. Malaysia Airlines, as the national carrier of a Muslim-majority country, should proudly reflect Malaysia’s Islamic and moral identity, while maintaining its global service excellence.
The global tourism and aviation markets are increasingly embracing ethical and faith-based travel trends. Several international airlines have proven that alcohol-free flights can still be profitable and highly rated when they emphasize premium service, hospitality, and comfort. The decision to remove alcohol would therefore not be regressive — it would be progressive and principled.
MAPIM believes this policy would:
● Strengthen Malaysia’s halal tourism and Islamic economy positioning.
● Encourage a family-friendly and respectful travel environment.
● Reduce costs related to alcohol licensing, handling, and wastage.
● Project Malaysia Airlines as a moral leader in aviation ethics and corporate responsibility.
The notion that banning alcohol diminishes competitiveness reflects a colonial mindset disconnected from today’s ethical consumer realities. True competitiveness arises from innovation, service excellence, and alignment with values — not from catering to habits contrary to Malaysia’s moral fabric.
MAPIM calls on Malaysia Airlines and the Ministry of Transport to take this opportunity to lead by example — showing that a national carrier can be modern, world-class, and value-driven without compromising its Islamic principles.
Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid
President MAPIM
