Executive Summary
Recent statements by Donald Trump confirming that the use of the US military is “always an option” to acquire Greenland mark a dangerous escalation in imperial behaviour by the United States. Coming immediately after the US military abduction of Venezuela’s president, this development signals not an isolated policy deviation, but the collapse of the post World War II international order built on sovereignty, international law, and multilateral restraint.
MAPIM assesses that the world has entered a post law global order, where raw power is openly asserted over legal norms, even against allies.
- From Hegemony to Open Imperialism
For decades, the United States justified interventions under the language of democracy, human rights, or security partnerships.
The Greenland episode removes this façade entirely.
Key indicators:
●Open threat of military force against a NATO ally (Denmark)
●Explicit rejection of sovereignty as inviolable
●Framing territorial acquisition as a “national security priority”
●Normalisation of annexation discourse in the 21st century
This represents a return to 19th century imperial logic, where territory, resources, and strategic routes are seized by force or threat of force.
- Greenland: Resources, Routes, and Control
Greenland is not about protection, it is about strategic domination.
Drivers include:
●Untapped rare earth minerals
●Control of emerging Arctic shipping routes due to climate change
●Military positioning against Russia and China
●Long term control of the Arctic security architecture
The fact that the US already maintains a military base in Greenland exposes the falseness of claims that Denmark cannot ensure security.
- The Venezuela Precedent: Proof of Willingness
The recent US military seizure of Venezuela’s president has shattered any remaining assumption that Washington would restrain itself from direct regime capture.
Greenland must be read in this sequence:
●Venezuela: regime seizure
●Iran: threats and hybrid destabilisation
●Greenland: open annexation rhetoric
This shows capability, intent, and precedent.
- NATO Fracture and the Illusion of Alliance
European leaders have publicly reaffirmed sovereignty and territorial integrity. However, their response remains politically cautious and strategically weak.
MAPIM notes:
■ Public statements without concrete deterrence
■Attempts to “play down” the crisis
■Dependence on US security guarantees despite threat from the same
power
This exposes NATO not as a collective of equals, but as a hierarchy dominated by US interests.
- Collapse of the Rules Based International Order
The post 1945 order rested on:
●UN Charter
●Prohibition of force
●Sovereign equality of states
Trump’s statements openly dismiss these foundations.
When the most powerful state:
●Claims morality over law
●Threatens allies with force
●Normalises annexation
The system does not merely weaken, it ceases to exist.
What replaces it is:
●Power blocs
●Militarised diplomacy
●Resource driven expansion
●Permanent instability
- Implications for the Muslim World and Global South
For the Muslim world, Palestine was never an exception. It was the preview.
Greenland confirms:
●Sovereignty is conditional for weaker states
●International law protects only the powerful
●Silence today invites domination tomorrow
●Iran, Venezuela, Palestine, and now Greenland illustrate the same pattern applied at different scales.
- MAPIM Position
MAPIM asserts the following:
●The United States is no longer acting as a hegemon constrained by norms, but as an open imperial power
●The global order has entered a lawless transition phase
●Appeals to international law alone are insufficient without collective resistance
●Moral clarity must replace diplomatic denial
- Strategic Conclusion
The question is no longer whether the world order is broken.
It is who will shape what comes next.
If nations, civil societies, and moral institutions remain silent, imperial logic will become the new normal.
History shows that empires do not collapse because they are resisted early, but because they are tolerated too long.
MAPIM CALLS FOR
●Global reaffirmation of sovereignty as non negotiable
●Collective resistance to normalisation of annexation
●Stronger South South and Ummah based cooperation
●Moral leadership rooted in justice, not fear
